Skills you need as a blogger

I have heard so many people say, “blogging is so easy!” lately. As much as I love a good argument, they are not always necessary. If you work online, then you know exactly how much time it takes to create content. Not just content, but great content. Skills are something that we all have, but sometimes we do not understand exactly what we are working with. Without spending any money, blogger skills are closer than you think!

Some pretty obvious skills…

I think it goes without saying that one of the biggest skills is definitely a love for writing. If not writing, then at least creating. Personally, I initially disliked writing, and it was my least favorite subject in school. Things have changed over the past few years, and it is something that I actually really love now! The best thing about writing is that you can actually learn to write better. With time, it is a skill that you develop and perfect. When I sit down to write a post, I am always trying to provide information, educate, or provide an opinion. Find what you are trying to say, and just start writing. It will come to you, I promise.

Get that shot!

Photography is a huge part of blogging, and it is what can really set you apart. This is a skill that I am working on every day, and something that definitely did not come naturally to me. Depending on what you are using as your camera, there can be a learning curve. Honestly, this is going to become easier over time. This is a skill that you will develop as you get more and more into blogging. Not only will you learn more about your phone or camera, but you will also find your photography style. You will find out what you like in your photos, the colors you like, and that can help to define your blog over time.

It is important to know something about marketing…

As someone with an educational background in marketing, this part came pretty easily for me. I’m not talking about launching a full campaign in every publication you can find. Use your social media accounts that you already have to drive traffic to your blog. Look into just adding a link to your post, or even creating handles that are specific for your blog. Not only is this a great way to network with the blogging community, but it is also free promotion! By really learning these skills, you can even find a side job working online as a social media manager!

Be your own graphic designer!

This honestly is probably the most difficult skill out of all of the ones I have listed. Not only does it require creative skills, but also technical skills. This is something that I really attempt to do, but I definitely outsource that part of my life right now. Mostly when it comes to website design! Even though I learned coding in high school (and hi Myspace days!), none if it seemed to last me past nineteen. Not only can understanding graphic design save you money, but you can make everything look exactly how you imagined it. That is a gift in itself, and I am so jealous of those of you that can do that!

Learn something about SEO

Similarly to how marketing is an essential part of your blog strategy, SEO is just an important skill to learn. SEO helps your blog show up on more search engines, which ultimately leads to more traffic. There are so many free courses online that show you exactly what to do, and this is another one of those skills you can learn over time. I did a whole post about SEO a while ago, and I went pretty into detail. There are also some great resources to be found just by googling too!

What skills do you think are essential for blogging?

I really like this post. I must say I was able to build the whole website from scratch on high school. And as I haven’t used that skill for years I regret to say I forgot it all! I am now learning SEO as I go. But I think my biggest struggle is promotion. I never though I will spend more time promoting then blogging. The day I hit 100 views in a month I will celebrate!

I did the same thing. I honestly never imagined all of the skills that I learned in high school would ever be useful. There are a lot of amazing free courses on SEO!

Love this post and the look of your blog. I agree, writing is something you’ll develop with the time. I just love blogging and creating content but not the actual writing part. Berry x

That’s so sweet, thanks! Once I actually sit down to write, I get into it. Usually when I write, I bust out multiple posts, so that helps! Thanks for reading!

Bloggers also need discipline and motivation. Sometimes we get distracted by a lot of things or something comes up and sidetracks us from our goals. Nice article by the way!
