I have always been a music lover. I have liked various types of music throughout the years, and some I am not so proud of. From binge listening to the queens of my life, the Spice Girls, to forcing my mom to listen to my extreme punk days in the car, I have been all over the place. The question I have been asking myself is, how many times can I really listen to my Spotify playlist? The answer my friends, is not too much longer. I have been getting more into podcasts as I reach the inevitable year of thirty. Why? Great question. It feeds my constant need for knowledge, and allows me to really win an argument with the misogynistic guy who lives next door. So, without further babble, here is why I love them, and here are the ones I love.
Alright, I love Taylor Swift too guys. Do I love enriching my mind and finding out about some incredible women more? You bet your tail I do. I spend quite a bit of time driving around, and there is nothing more I dislike than hearing that one Shawn Mendes song for the sixth time in a thirty minute period. About three years ago, a professor I had asked the class to find a podcast we love and stick with it. I can honestly say, that is one project I have completely nailed. Podcasts are a great way to still listen to something interesting, but maybe learn while you’re at it.
So, let me get down to why YOU need to hop on the podcast train. We all know that the world we live in is not necessarily perfect. There is a ton of issues that are impacting our everyday lives, and most of my fellow millennials are not indulging in these issues. Want to know why? Because the news is not necessarily digestible. I do not necessarily wake up early enough to watch the news, I am usually not around the house to watch the nightly news. My friends and I have completely different schedules, so I do not get my daily girl talk in. Plus, it is just nice to listen to someone who is passionate and knowledgable about specific information.
Anyway, let’s get to the podcasts!
I do not think I would be a blogger if I did not say Girlboss Radio with Sophia Amoruso. While I am let down about their recent bankruptcy, I think she has a great message, and a great voice. Her podcast features women who as they say are “boundary-pushing”. So, why is this necessary? Because we are not treated the same as our lovely male counterparts. Women need to see their sisters running companies, sitting in high-ranking positions, and just being….well….a girlboss. These women have jobs ranging from CEO, Founders, Writers, and anything else you can imagine. If you are looking for motivation for your career, then this is definitely what you should be listening to on your way to Target.
Remember when I was talking about that project I had? This is the podcast that goes along with it. Say hello to That’s So Retrograde. Basically, I love this podcast because I feel like they are actually my friends! I even catch myself walking around singing their intro, that is how much I love this podcast. This is a sassy podcast featuring wellness, meditation, and they prevent everything in a fun and lighthearted way. As someone who has been religiously meditating for years, I like their twist on the matter, and I enjoy that they are making it mainstream. I am just still waiting on meditation classes to start in the city I live in. Bring on the balance!
I was introduced to this podcast by the guy beside me on a flight to San Francisco a few months ago, this is 2 Dope Queens. First off, I really love New York City, and I love hearing about people’s lives while living there. This touches on race, romance, relationships, and a ton of other things. They have a ton of comedians on the show to tell their personal stories for our enjoyment, which everyone needs a good laugh. Especially when you have been sitting in North Atlanta traffic for an hour. As someone who is very passionate about diversity being represented, this does a great job of including EVERYONE, which already makes it amazing. This podcast does feature some less serious topics, which makes it a great listen.
I have always read Bustle, and use it as a great way to read articles whenever I have some downtime. Their podcast Honestly Though is really amazing, and also incredibly useful. This podcast features different women’s health topics each week, and I find that to be entertaining, and useful. There are a lot of weird things that happen to our bodies, and these episodes can cover the weird topics that we may not be wanting to ask about. A lot of people my age don’t have health insurance, and do not know when is the right time to go to a doctor, and when something is just part of life. They get pretty specific about their topics, which is how discussions about health should be. Also, check out their podcast about relationships, I Want It That Way.
Lastly, there is Call Your Girlfriend. As someone who has best friends across the country, this really touches that small soft part of my heart. Since all of my friends are in different time zones, have different work hours, and have different happy hours that we have to hit, getting together and talking is hard. This has actual phone interviews between friends that cover current topics. Be eat POTUS and his small hands, or Perrie Edward’s nipples, they cover trending topics that I would call one of my friends to talk about. Plus, they met at a Gossip Girl viewing party, so how great is that? You know you love them. XOXO
