Travel Guide: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

If you are looking for somewhere that actually looks like a fairytale, then look no further. Rothenburg ob der Tauber seriously will check every single box. From the medieval walls to the incredible flowers, it is somewhere that needs to be on your travel list for 2018.

Step back in time in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

If you feel like living your dreams of being a medieval king or queen, then you have to go here. It is nestled in Southern Germany along the “Romantic Road”. If you have ever heard of that, it is a little highway that leads you through some of the most beautiful places that Germany has to offer. Also, if you have ever watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, then you are already halfway there. The town is protected by the same wall from the 12th century, and is basically a portal to another world. Not only can you walk the historic walls around the entire town, but it also gives some incredible views!

We stayed in the heart of the city at Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen which is over 600 years old. Staying here gave us not only easy access to the old town itself, but also helped to enrich our experience. There is even a restaurant and beer garden downstairs that serves the best mustard I’ve ever had in my life. No joke!

Touring Rothenburg ob der Tauber

In addition to just taking in the gorgeous architecture, there are some key points that you just cannot miss. The Käthe Wohlfahrt shop is a perfect place to get some souvenirs from your trip. They specialize in traditional Germany Christmas items. Across from the store is another shop that actually contains a museum in as well. Sadly, you cannot take photos, but it is Disney quality holiday decor. If you are lucky enough to see their car, be sure to get a photo in front of it! As I mentioned earlier, you can walk the walls of the city for absolutely nothing. You can enter the guard tower for a small fare, but just walking the walls is good enough.

You have to get a picture of Plönlein. It is the most famous image of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Not only does it look like it is out of a fairytale, but the two towers in the back both date back to the 13th century! There are also incredible gardens to view, tons of great shops, and even a criminal museum! If you are ready for some history, meet in front of the Rathaus (town hall) to go on the Nightwatchmen tour! It is 8 Euro, and you get to hear stories of how people lived in older times, and gives you a different feel from the hopping city during the day. By the way, travel by foot! Walking is not only great for you, but it is the best way to see everything!

What about food, right?

As someone with German heritage, the food is out of this world! Every street you turn on, there are gorgeous little cafes offering pastries, coffee, or even beer. Since majority of these traditional buildings don’t have air conditioner, enjoy your dinner on one of the streets. Not only do you get to enjoy regional food with a view, but it is also fun to people watch! Don’t forget to get a Schneeball! They are essentially deep fried pie dough rolled into a ball, and covered in various toppings. Some come plain, others are dipped in chocolate. If you are into pastries that aren’t too sweet, then this is a must have. I also did not see these anywhere else, so stock up!

I have been to Rothenburg before and I agree, it is a beautiful place. The only thing I disagree though is the Käthe Wohlfahrt shop does not sell traditional German Christmas items. It has a few pieces that are typical to different German regions, like the Erzgebirge, but the vast majority in there is Kitsch you would never find in a traditional German home. They are made with tourist in mind.
