How to update old blog posts in a few simple steps

update old blog posts

How can you update old blog posts?

I’ve been blogging for a few years now, and never really went back to look at my blog posts that had been posted for a while. I was in the middle of working on my new site layout, and noticed something. Some of the first posts that I ever created had not been updated in years. So, I set out on a mission to update my old blog posts. While it is something that I am still working on, it has been really fun to go back and work on it. I’ve compiled what I’ve been doing to my blog so that you can update old blog posts too!

What you should always be doing to update your old blog posts…

I know that for me, my photography has evolved over the years. In some of the oldest posts on my blog, I still had stock photos from when I did not have a camera set up! Not only is this killing the authenticity of your blog, but it is killing your overall blog appearance. When you are looking to update your old blog posts, updating your photos should be your main priority. While my photography is not necessarily where I want it to be, it seriously is so much better than it was before. What I did was went through and did a ton of updated photos for my blog, and then I was able to knock quite a few posts out doing that.

Speaking of updating photos, start thinking about your Pinterest graphics! I’ve been really focused on building up my Pinterest game, and graphics are such a huge part of making it work for you. When you go to update old blog posts, take a couple of minutes and create some graphics to promote the blog post on various social media platforms. When I create graphics for Pinterest, I do about three different images to really maximize the exposure of my blog post. There is a blog post coming about Pinterest, so be sure to sign up with your email to receive posts in your inbox! Now that you have spent all of this time perfecting the appearance of your post, don’t forget to share them on your accounts! Let new readers know about everything you have written!

How is your SEO looking?

When I first began blogging, SEO was definitely not one of my major concerns. Since working in marketing, SEO has not only become vital to the life of your blog, but it can even cause you to not have any new readers! If you haven’t already done so, I’ve done a ton of posts about SEO (here, here). Also, if you haven’t installed Yoast SEO to your WordPress blog, then get with it! It makes SEO almost foolproof, and almost makes it part of your daily routine. I won’t get into SEO right now, but it helps your blog get noticed through search engines. More appearance on search engines, more views!

Another big aspect of that you need to consider if you update old blog posts is your keyword selection. Keywords make a huge impact on how SEO is looking at your blog. When updating your blog posts, try to use long-tail keywords! These are going to be more specific, and lead to better views, and potentially better search results. One last idea to update old blog posts is to link back to old posts and new posts alike. While you are updating, if you have written a post about a topic that is related, throw a link in there! This can help keep your audience on your blog longer.

Great post. I’m just now getting back to posting on a regular basis and definitely need to apply these tips. I have some post with only 20 to 50 views and then others with 1,000’s of views. I’m thinking, are the ones with a 1,000+ a fluke, especially since they were posted around the same time as the ones with only 20 to 50 views. I’ve gotta figure this all out and as you share, “get to it.” Especially with my Pinterest and SEO game.

Such useful tips. I am definitely going to work on my old posts after I have generated some content on my blog. As for the photos I am now using stock photos, so will have to work on that.
