Blog Investments to make in 2018
When I first began blogging, I was convinced there was no way I would spend much money on my blog. Boy, was I wrong! Choosing blog investments is actually something that I love now, and think is really important to having a great blog. Let me go ahead and say that I don’t think you need to spend tons of money, but if you are serious about it, there needs to be some sort of investment. Even if it is just investing more of your time into the blog, putting effort can make all of the difference.
Investing in your blog’s appearance
It took me a while to actually want to invest in the appearance of my blog. I was decently pleased with the free theme that I was using on WordPress, and it wasn’t something that I was serious about. A little while later, I decided that I wanted to start looking at themes, and then it changed my world. I’ve used quite a few different sites to find the perfect theme, but Pipdig has been my absolute favorite up to this point. Pipdig is the creator of the current theme I have on the blog, and has tons of different themes.
Depending on your budget, there are seriously a vast number of themes available. Personally, I think WordPress has some great free themes to use, and are sometimes just as great as the paid options. Etsy and Creative Market are two places that I have seen some pretty affordable options. If you are ready to make a serious blog investment, think about working with a web designer and creating a custom site that is just for you!
Having your own domain
When I began my blogging adventure, I actually went ahead and bought my domain before my blog was even set up. I had done quite a bit of studying before I started mine, and that was the number one tip. I knew that I wanted to use my name, and I didn’t want to take any chances. Not only does it look better for you to have your own domain, but it also is necessary for monetization. Many ad networks won’t let you monetize unless you own your own domain.
I purchased my domain, and hosted through GoDaddy. It was the easiest process that I have ever dealt with, and their tech team has saved me from some really annoying issues. My hosting and everything is less than $40 dollars a year, which I find to be relatively fair. If you are looking to start a blog, your first blog investment should definitely be your own domain!
I think I’ve been beating a dead horse, but I’m going to mention Tailwind again! Not only has it seriously changed the amount of traffic I get to my blog each month, but my Pinterest numbers are doubling in front of my eyes. I have an entire e-book talking about how to get an amazing Pinterest strategy, but Tailwind is important to your blog! I used the free option for a while, and that worked well for me before I really saw what Tailwind and Pinterest could do. I have just the basic plan which is about $15 a month, but you have access to so much more!
I’ve done a few posts about Tailwind, and I even have my own Tribe! If you are starting out as a blogger, Pinterest is something you definitely need to focus on, and set it up ASAP! Using Pinterest properly can also teach you quite a bit about marketing (this is coming from someone who does marketing every single day, and has degrees in it!). It’s also a great way to find new bloggers that you will love!
What is one of the most important blog investments? Yourself
The blogging world can get really wrapped up by the aesthetics. Not that there is anything wrong with drooling over Kate La Vie‘s interiors! While it is important for your blog to look nice, it is far more important to have great content. Even if you are just starting out, a reader is able to tell if you have taken the time to put yourself into it. When I say that you are one of the most important blog investments, it is more like a personal investment. This can be continuing your education, spending more time working on your blog, or even time away from your blog.
A healthy mind is going to produce great content. If you feel the drive to work on your blog, do it. On the same hand, if the blogging world is stressing you out, or you are too busy, take a step away. Currently, I’m in a phase of loving to blog, but that isn’t always the case. In fact, taking a break a while ago actually helped me fall back in love with blogging! After all, a blog isn’t a blog without a blogger!
