Why should I care about Instagram engagement?
As I’ve mentioned, social media has officially taken over the lives of anyone who works online. Not only is it free marketing for your brand, but it can be a way to create a huge career for yourself. Now more than ever, brands are looking for engagement more than the following that you have, or even the overall quality of your image. Instagram engagement is something that I have been working quite heavily on over the past few months, and I’m ready to break down what helps my engagement rate!
First of all, what on Earth is an engagement rate?
Determining your engagement rate is actually quite simple. As someone who doesn’t enjoy math, it is really easy! Here is the ultimate formula to find your Instagram engagement rate! The ideal rate for Instagram is anywhere between 3-6%, but anything thing higher than that is what you really want to strive for!
Tip 1: Quality over quantity!
I know that we have all heard this in every single grade since we entered school. It’s probably the biggest tip though, no joke. Creating a beautiful image is going to go a lot further on Instagram than anything else you can create. Since Instagram is a visually driven platform, that is what users are expecting. It doesn’t matter if you are using a DSLR or just your phone, there are tons of tips that can help you create amazing images. Personally, I’m nowhere near a photographer, but just by practice, I’ve been able to become satisfied with the images I take. Switch around your style, room, or flatlays to see what your audience responds best to.
Tip 2: Find what time your audience is most active
This is a tip that I wish I had learned forever ago! Just because you are awake at 11pm, it doesn’t mean that your audience is awake then. Thanks to Instagram analytics, you are able to see the exact times your users are most active. These times usually are when people are going to work, are leaving work, or later in the night. These times will vary depending on where you live in the world, and where your audience lives as well. I have quite a big number of impressions from Instagram users located in the United Kingdom, so I have to be aware of the times that are best for them as well.
Tip 3: Study Instagram, seriously!
Most users will tell you that they are cruisers of the explore page. I know that I am! This is an amazing tool to find out what is going on in the world, and what people are doing. I’ll go ahead and say that you should never copy anyone, and you really shouldn’t use photos that don’t belong to you. This can make a mess bigger than you can imagine, and no one wants that. It is important to know what is popular. This will help your audience be able to engage with your content better, therefore, giving your Instagram engagement a boost!
Tip 4: Write those captions!
To be really honest, I hate writing out captions. Even though I know the importance of them, I slightly miss the days where I could post an emoji of a cactus and keep rolling. Creating a caption helps you connect with your audience, and has a serious impact on your Instagram engagement! Additionally, it helps the viewer stay on your image longer which can significantly impact your Instagram engagement rate. If you struggle with creating captions, then make it personal. Talk about what you did that day, what your image is about, and include a call to action as well. This can be something like a question that will help you get the conversation started!
Tip 5: Comment, like, follow
Remember the golden rule? Do unto others as you wish to be done to you, or something like that? This applies like no other in the Instagram world. You really cannot expect for your Instagram engagement rate to be amazing if you don’t share the love. This means that you need to comment on others, like photos, and follow your favorite Instagrammers. I’m sure that they will appreciate the favor, and typically return it as well! Also, make sure that you reply to the comments you recieve on your account!
Tip 6: Hashtags and Tag Accounts
Hashtags are a really important aspect of Instagram right now. We can now add hashtags to our bios, and even follow hashtags directly in our feed. Find hashtags that fit your niche or style, and add them to your images! I have quite an exhaustive list of Instagram hashtags for bloggers that you can check out right here! Something that I have been working on is tagging accounts in my images. There are accounts that you can tag which could potentially feature your images, but I usually just tag whatever is in my photo. For example, if I’m wearing some boots, I’ll tag their Instagram in the image.
